Alton man shot after dispute over gambling debt

ALTON - Two men who reportedly had a dispute over a gambling debt exchanged gunfire just before noon Thursday outside a Wallace Street residence, leaving one of them wounded and the other in custody, police said.

The man who was shot was identified as Mark D. Shorter, 21, of the 200 block of Admiral Drive in Godfrey. After the shooting, another person drove Shorter to Alton Memorial Hospital. From there, he was airlifted by a helicopter from ARCH Air Medical Services to a St. Louis hospital.
