WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (AP) -- A 16-year-old boy is jailed on $1 million bond after being accused as an adult in a southern Illinois shooting that killed an eighth-grade girl.
Prosecutors in Franklin County charged Austin Sandefur on Thursday with first-degree murder in the death two days earlier of 14-year-old Elizabeth Obrecht.
Authorities allege that Sandefur shot Obrecht in the chest with a semiautomatic handgun in a vacant house in West Frankfort.
During a court appearance Thursday, Sandefur told the judge that he understands the charges and he didn't mean to kill anyone.
A judge appointed a public defender for Sandefur, and a preliminary hearing is set for June 3.
Sandefur is being held in a juvenile lockup, where he'll stay for safety reasons pending trial.
