MODOT asks drivers for caution in work zones

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- State officials are calling on motorists to be extra-cautious while driving through highway work zones.

The Missouri Department of Transportation's Work Zone Awareness Week started Monday with Operation Orange and an appeal to motorists -- "Don't Barrel Through Work Zones." It's a reminder for drivers to watch for highway workers, pedestrians and other vehicles.

In 2008, 12 people were killed in work zones, up from five deaths in the previous year. Three MODOT employees lost their lives during 2008.

Speed, inattention and tailgating are cited as the cause of most work-zone crashes.

Besides the usual cones and barrels in work zones, orange lights are being placed in buildings, landmarks and businesses across the state to remind drivers to slow down in work zones.
