CHAMPAIGN, IL.-The No. 16 Ohio State Buckeyes proved why they have won four straight Big Ten titles and have one of the top women's basketball programs in the nation Monday before 1,017 fans at the Assembly Hall.
Ohio State (14-2, 5-0 Big Ten) defeated Illinois 67-35. After winning its first three games of the season, the Illini (4-13, 0-6 Big Ten) have now lost seven straight games and 13 of 14.
Illinois led 4-2 early in the game, and with7:44 left in the first half went up 14-13. However, the Buckeyes finished the half on a 14-6 run, and came out of the second half on fire. Ohio State outscored the Illini 40-15 in the second half.
Jantel Lavender (14 points), Brittany Johnson (14), Star Allen (13) and Ashlee Trebilcock (11) all scored in double figures for the Buckeyes. Lavender also recorded 14 rebounds.
Jenna Smith led Illinois with 14 points and Lacey Simpson added 12.
The Fighting Illini return to Assembly Hall on Jan. 15 at 7:00 p.m. CT to face the Iowa Hawkeyes, before traveling to Wisconsin (Jan. 18) and Ohio State (Jan 22).
