CHAMPAIGN, IL.- The No. 8 Illinois Fighting Illini opened up its 2008 home regular season Saturday. At the end of the day, the team was right where it wanted to be.
The Fighting Illini (2-0) defeated Findlay 32-6 and McKendree 39-9 in a triangular before 845 fans at Huff Hall.
No. 2 Jimmy Kennedy (133), No. 6 John Wise (Heavyweight), No. 11 Roger Smith-Bergsrud (165), No. 11 John Dergo (174), No. 17 Jordan Blanton (184), B.J. Futrell (125), and Grant Paswall (157) each won both of their matches against both Findlay and McKendree opponents.
Illinois recorded five pins against McKendree.
Wise won in an 11-1 major decision over Findlay's Travis Clark, and pinned McKendree's Andrew Davis at 1:55. Blanton pinned Tom Edwards of McKendree at 1:18. Kennedy registered a technical fall over Alex Shumaker of Findlay and defeated McKendree's Wade Lowe at 5:37. Dergo pinned McKendree's Andrew Cheesman after 51 seconds and tallied a 24-7 technical fall over Findlay's Jeff Havelka.
The Fighting Illini travel to Evanston, Ill. For the Midlands Invitational Dec. 29-30 open Big Ten play on the road against Iowa on Jan. 25. The wrestling squad returns to Huff Hall against Northwestern on Feb. 6 to take on the Wildcats in the first Big Ten home meet of the season
