(KMOV) – Sheriff's deputies were called to a home in Jefferson County, where they found the bodies of a man and woman, shot to death in their home.

This happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Paula in northern Jefferson County.

The bodies recovered were 61-year-old Karen Skaggs and 68-year-old Clarence Skaggs. While police are not calling this a murder-suicide, authorities say both had been shot in a bedroom, with a handgun a short distance from the male.

According to the Jefferson County sheriff’s public information officer, the woman’s employer became concerned when she did not arrive for work Monday morning. The employer called the victim’s sister, who then called the sheriff and met the deputies at the home.

The mother of one of the victims owned the home. The man and woman had been caring for her in the home for several years. She died in December, and ownership of the house was turned over to the probate court.

The sheriff’s office says the couple planned to move out and had packed up most of their belongings.

There was no sign of forced entry into the house, although the front door was unlocked when police arrived.
