WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) -- Democratic state Rep. Eddie Washington, the first African-American legislator from Lake County, has died of a heart attack. He was 56.
Sen. Terry Link, chairman of the Lake County Democratic Party, says Washington died Friday night in Waukegan.
Washington had represented the 60th District in northern Illinois since 2003. The district includes North Chicago, Waukegan and Park City.
He previously worked for the Lake County sheriff's department.
Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn says Washington was "a good man with a servant's heart."
Link says a three-person panel will pick someone to finish the six months left in Washington's term and appear on the November ballot.
Washington is survived by his wife and seven children.
