(KMOV) – A truck driver has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge in a multi-car crash on Interstate 55 that left two people dead.

The accident happened on June 2, 2010 in the northbound lanes of I-55 at McNutt Road near Herculaneum.

Jay Valentine, 32, of Huntsville, Texas, who was driving a tractor trailer involved in the crash, pleaded guilty to carelessly operating a vehicle.  He received two months probation.

Authorities say Valentine glanced away from the highway and counter-steered into the left lane of traffic, hitting one car, driving over another and causing a chain reaction wreck involving five other cars.

Charles Martin, 52, of Perryville, Missouri, and Alana McKnight, 28, of Festus, Missouri, were killed in the wreck. The victims were in separate cars.

McKnight was airlifted to St. Louis University hospital where she died. Martin died at the scene.

Cathy Hawn, 53, Terry Hawn, 58, Alice Falk, 79, Mary Davis, 65, and Mark London, 51, were injured in the crash.
