Miller has bad day in poor pitching conditions

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- If you looked at pure numbers this spring you'd obviously think Shelby Miller has had a brutal camp.  In Grapefruit League play, the 2nd year Major Leaguer has a 6.23 ERA.

But numbers don't tell the whole story.

The wind was absolutely brutal today at JetBlue Park.  Pitching was hard for everybody.  That's true on both sides.

"It's tough.  Today was obviously a tough day to pitch," Miller said. "At the same time when the season comes and the wind is blowing out to left you can't make any excuses for it.  What I would actually do is pitch around him and make them hit it the other way or don't give them anything inside to pull."

Additionally, Miller has made three starts and faced the Red Sox and Tigers in all three of them.  Those were the two best teams in the American League last season.  But he doesn't use that as an excuse either.

"I want to face the best.  I want to go out and face the good hitters," Miller said. "Obviously (the Red Sox) had their good lineup in today and that's going to bring out the best in me as a pitcher."

Shelby Miller insists he's not far off from where he wants to be at this point in the spring.  He says he wishes he'd pitched better but knows he just has to make a better pitch in a couple different spots and this spring would look a lot different for him.
