JUPITER, Fla.—Last week in Fort Myers Adam Wainwright had his first start of spring training wiped out due to rain. He ended up taking he ball the next day at home. To keep him on schedule for Opening Day, though, he was required to start on three days rest...in spring training.
That day is today.
Compounded by the fact Wainwright was dealing with illness yesterday and had to leave early, this should be a fascinating start for the staff ace. Here’s the rest of Mike Matheny’s lineup:
1) Mark Ellis - DH
2) Jhonny Peralta - SS
3) Matt Holliday - LF
4) Allen Craig - RF
5) Yadier Molina - C
6) Jon Jay - CF
7) Xavier Scruggs - 1B
8) Kolten Wong - 2B
9) Daniel Descalso - 3B
Following Wainwright will be Randy Choate, Kevin Siegrist, Tim Cooney, Trevor Rosenthal, Jorge Rondon and Zack Petrick.
- Wainwright is the glue that holds this entire starting rotation together. I know the rest of the country loves to focus on the young guns like Michael Wacha and Shelby Miller, but the reality is they are not expected to be dominant. Mike Matheny would settle for good with those two at this stage of their overall development. Wainwright is different. He’s paid like an ace. He’s looked at like an ace. He’s expected to performance like an ace. And that ace has worked on a new sinker thus far in spring training and many think it’ll be the talk of the league this year. If Wainwright can continue to add weapons to his arsenal, watch out.
- Aside from Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams this looks like a regular season lineup for Mike Matheny. Once again it features Jon Jay and not Peter Bourjos. Now Bourjos is coming off a hamstring injury that has slowed him for much of the past week so it’s unlikely Mike Matheny would want to push his new center fielder into back-to-back duty just yet. But don’t underestimate the solid spring Jay has had to this point. He’s been far improved from what the team saw a season ago and seems to have his confidence back. I find it hard to believe with Bourjos’ speed he’ll ever become a bench player behind Jay, but a platoon situation is not out of the question.
