Death threats allegedly sent to Kansas City Rep over proposed Castle Doctrine bill

(KMOV) -- A State Representative is increasing his security when he began to receive death threats because of the bill he proposed.

Kansas City Representative Randy Dunn is proposing a change to the state’s Castle Doctrine.

“I’m a firm believer that you should have the right to protect your home and protect your family in the instance that someone is posing an imminent threat,” Dunn said. “All I’m doing is saying that rather than jumping to violence immediately, we should look for opportunities to resolve these issues in another manner.”

The proposed changes to Missouri’s Castle Doctrine come after hearing from constituents in the wake of the Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis cases.

Defendants in both of the Florida killings used “Stand Your Ground” as a defense, which is a Florida law allowing the use of deadly force to protect yourself.

The bill would require the defendant to retreat before shooting to prove they had no other choice but to use deadly force. This would disallow automatic immunity from a civil lawsuit for anyone using deadly force or shooting someone.
