JUPITER, FL—The waiting is over.  Cardinals fans will finally get to see their beloved top prospect in action this afternoon.  Oscar Taveras, widely considered one of the best prospects in all of Major League Baseball, is starting in right field at Port St. Lucie for the first time this spring.  The 21-year old’s been rehabbing an injured ankle for several months.

Taveras has a lot of work to do in order to make the big league team out of spring training.  The Cards have plenty of depth in the outfield with Matt Holliday, Peter Bourjos and Allen Craig slated to start.  Jon Jay, Shane Robinson and even Randal Grichuk are possible depth options.

Taveras may need to have an exceptional next few weeks at the plate and in the field to force the Cardinals to make a different decision than sending him to AAA.

Here’s Mike Matheny’s lineup in the road game, at Port St. Lucie against the Mets, of this split squad day:

1) Jon Jay - CF

2) Kolten Wong - 2B

3) Matt Holliday - DH

4) Jhonny Peralta - SS

5) Daniel Descalso - 3B

6) Scott Moore - 1B

7) Randal Grichuk - LF

8) Oscar Taveras - RF

9) Tony Cruz - C

Carlos Martinez will make his second start of spring and be relieved by Tyler Lyons, Tim Cooney, Seth Maness among others.

The Cardinals also have a home game today as well, with Adam Wainwright starting.  The staff ace was supposed to pitch yesterday in Fort Myers but that game was rained out.

Here’s the lineup for the home matchup against the Marlins:

1) Matt Carpenter - 3B

2) Mark Ellis - 2B

3) Allen Craig - RF

4) Matt Adams - 1B

5) Yadier Molina - C

6) Shane Robinson - CF

7) Joey Butler - DH

8) James Ramsey - LF

9) Pete Kozma - SS

Wainwright will be followed by Lance Lynn (who was supposed to start).  Then it will be Kevin Siegrist, Keith Butler, Lee Stoppleman and possibly a couple more minor leaguers.
