(KMOV) -- News 4 went to the Missouri Department of Transportation after a viewer's dash cam recording pieces of concrete falling onto his vehicle while driving under Interstate 55 in South County.
Brad Witte was driving under I-55 on Reavis Barracks Road Thursday afternoon when several small chunks of concrete landed on the truck’s hood and windshield.
“That thing could have come through the sun roof and killed me, if I had been another five or ten feet further down the road,” said Witte.
Mark Croarkin with MoDOT said ice and salt were the cause of the crumbling overpass.
“It was inspected. It was fine when people looked at it, it’s an aging structure,” said Croarkin.
MoDOT said the bridge was built in 1962 and was last inspected in July of 2012. Drivers were shocked after seeing the dashcam video and MoDOT said this may not be the end.
“I hate to say they’ll probably be a few more with some crumbs falling off. We’re going to be out looking, looking the best we can,” said Croarkin.
MoDOT said they watch 1,200 bridges in the area and they inspect them at least once every two years.
News 4 will continue to look into this story and what was in the last inspection report.
