O'FALLON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A suspect is in custody after a child was kidnapped in O'Fallon, Mo.,Thursday, police say.

According to police, a 10-year-old girl was taken from a home in the 100 block of McCluer Drive around 5:30 Thursday morning by John Classen, 17.

O'Fallon Police Chief Roy Joachimstaler said Classen was stopped around 6 a.m. at a checkpoint that was set up not far from the girl's home. Police discovered the girl in the car and took her to a hospital.

Joachimstaler says police were “very, very fortunate to get on it right away.”

Classen is in custody and is known to the family. Evidence at the home indicates forced entry, but no charges have been issued at this time. Classen is charged with kidnapping, burglary and a child abuse.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports Classen is a high school friend of the girl's older brother and reportedly had a crush on the girl.

The investigation is ongoing, but police say it is likely an isolated incident.

"At this point, it is preliminary stages of investigation however, it is not believed that anyone else in the neighborhood should be alarmed at this point," Officer Diana Damke said.
