Fox School District to pay millions in severance

ARNOLD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

News 4 has learned the Fox School District will be paying out $2.7 million in severance pay to employees who are willing to accept an incentive package, and a district employee said the price could rise.

The district's chief financial officer said the costs could exceed $2.7 million if enough employees accept the incentive package.

“If 140 employees take it, it could cost $4 million in incentive payments,” said Fox School District CFO John Brazeal.

Many Jefferson County taxpayers told News 4 the incentive program is “crazy.” The news of the incentive package comes months after the district paid $130,000 to former Superintendent Diane Critchlow and also a paid a former assistant superintendent $66,000 to leave after only working for the district for two years.

Brazeal said 2015 will be the last year severance packages are offered. He also said when he took over in July, 2014 the district was projecting a $7 million shortfall but currently has a balance budget. Brazeal told News 4 offering the incentive packages will lower future payrolls.

“Right now a high paid teacher makes $80,000. The replacement will make $37, 000,” Brazeal said.

Brazeal said the district will not see the benefits of the savings until 2016.
