ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO -

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – An officer was hospitalized after responding to a domestic violence situation Monday night in South County.

According to police, the officer arrived at a home in the 300 block of Shadwell Drive just before 8:00 p.m. after receiving a call about a possible domestic violence situation. When the officer arrived to the scene, he saw Jontea Broadenax, later identified as a suspect, his mother and his grandmother seated on a couch.

Broadenax's mother told the officer her son had been upset earlier in the day, but everything had since returned to normal. The mother said she did not want to file a report for the earlier incident.

The officer then spoke with Broadenax who, he said, was cooperative and calm.

As the officer was getting into his car, the mother approached him and said Broadenax had become aggressive and verbally threatened her and his grandmother. The mother told the officer she wanted Broadenax to be taken to jail.

As the officer approached the home he could hear Broadenax shouting from inside, according to police.

When the officer entered the home he ordered Broadenax, who was seated on the couch, to stand and place his hands behind his back because he was under arrest.

According to police, as Broadenax began standing up, the officer reached for his arm at which time the suspect pulled it away and began walking away from the officer. The officer grabbed his taser and ordered Broadenax to stop, which he did. As the officer holstered his taser, Broadenax turned and struck him with a closed fist.

The officer and Broadenax then fell onto the couch in the living room, at which time the officer activated his radio's emergency alert.

The officer continued telling Broadenax to “stop resisting” during the struggle.

An assisting officer arrived to the scene roughly six minutes after the struggle began and ordered Broadenax to get on the ground. After failing to comply with the second officer's commands, the officer deployed his taser.

After being tasered, Broadenax was handcuffed.

The suspect and officer were transported to a local hospital where Broadenax was treated for a hand injury. The officer was treated for abrasions to his face, left hand and a possible head injury.

According to police, warrants will be applied for on Broadenax for domestic peace disturbance, domestic destruction of property, assault second degree on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

The officer involved in the struggle has worked with the St. Louis County Police Department for four years.
