St. Louis parochial school adds facial recognition cameras

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis parochial high school is increasing its security efforts by adding facial recognition cameras at several of its entrances.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the system is now in its second week of use at St. Mary's High School. Doors automatically unlock for students, faculty, staff and volunteers after the system processes photos already uploaded of them.

The system also can be programmed to exclude people, such as sex offenders or disgruntled employees, by keeping the doors locked.

The Roman Catholic school's principal said the installation comes on the heels of a school safety seminar he recently attended. He said a speaker noted that schools do more to prepare for fires than for violence, when the latter is more likely.
