ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- The pilot of a medical helicopter was killed when the helicopter he was flying crashed near St. Louis University Hospital late Friday night.
A St. Louis Fire Department official said the accident happened on Rutger between Grand and Spring. The pilot, identified as 52-year-old Ronald Rector, was going to the hospital from ARCH's base when the helicopter crashed onto an unoccupied car.
Officials with the FAA were in St. Louis Saturday morning to investigate the crash. No one else was injured in the accident.
Patients visiting St. Louis University Hospital for dialysis may get to Drummond Hall by taking Chouteau and going south on Spring.
Air Methods released a statement on the accident:
“We can confirm that an accident involving one of our EC-130 helicopters occurred Friday, March 6, 2015 at approximately 11:10pm CT. We are deeply saddened by the news that our sole occupant, our pilot was fatally injured, and our hearts go out to the pilot's family. The FAA and the NTSB have our full cooperation as they investigate the accident.”
