The name of a candidate running for Director of the Riverview Fire District was left off the ballot for the April election in Jennings.
Miranda Avant-Elliott has spent many months passing out pamphlets in the Jennings to gain support ahead of the April elections. She recently discovered the election for Director of the Riverview Fire District was not included on Jennings' ballot. The district covers an area of six municipalities.
“Someone should have been on top of this to make sure this was not an error,” Avant-Elliott said.
The Jennings Fire Department was absorbed by the Riverview Fire Protection District in September, 2014. Jennings residents will have to wait until August to vote for the fire board's director. The district is in the process of requesting the April election be declared null and void.
“There's supposed to be certain paperwork filed to the circuit court and the court is supposed to remit it to the Recorder of Deeds and the Board of Elections. That never happened so we were never officially notified of any new boundaries,” said Eric Fey with the St. Louis County Board of Elections.
Fey said the district will have to pay for the August elections. Avant-Elliott said she is disappointed, saying the delays may cause setbacks for her and her opponents.
“All of the work to get supporters and all of the work to make sure my name is out there for the April election is up in the air, it's questionable whether or not that same support will be there come August,” Avant-Elliott said.
