A frantic search ensued after a 2-year-old girl was found wandering in an apartment building on Washington Avenue near Tucker.
20-year-old Latifah Mahasan said she found the toddler in pajamas near the first floor elevators Monday night.
“No one was claiming her. No one had seen her. I felt like a parent at the moment,” Mahasan said.
Mahasan then went door to door in the building asking other residents if toddler was their child.
“My husband got up to answer the door, and the girl said ‘Oh my god, have you guys seen a missing toddler?” said resident Tanya Johnson.
Police were eventually called. Officers canvassed the building and found the child's mother asleep. The toddler got out of her apartment in the middle of the night. The mother believed the 2-year-old was still asleep.
“Just lock the door, make sure everything is secure,” Johnson said.
