(Missouri Football App) - There is not a lot to take away from Mizzou’s 58-14 win over Murray State Saturday.
James Franklin carved up the Racers’ defense for 318 and 3 touchdowns. Henry Josey ran for 113 on only 13 carries in his returns and sophomore Russell Hansbrough carried the ball 8 times for 104 yards.
It was good to see Franklin in rhythm, Josey running at full speed, and the defense holding the Racers offense in check.
We should keep our optimism tepid, at least for now. The Racers, an FCS team, sports a defense ranked 118 in total defense among FCS teams in 2012.
Expect the Tigers to put up good (but somewhat less impressive) numbers throughout the month of September. Mizzou’s remaining games should result in victories with this week’s contest against Toledo being the only serious challenge.
The Rockets finished 2012 with a 9-4 record and has an offense that features nine returning starters. Toledo also comes from the MAC, a conference that is known for challenging teams from the power conferences.
After facing off against Toledo, the Tigers take on Indiana, the perpetual doormat of the Big Ten who is improving, but should not beat the Tigers. Mizzou closes out non-conference play on Sep. 28 against Sun Belt power Arkansas State, who should not be overlooked but should not pose a challenge as serious as Toledo.
It is nice for Tigers to build some momentum heading into conference play but we need to keep their early season accomplishments in perspective.
