(Missouri Football App) - The Tigers were beneficiaries of missed opportunities in their 38-23 win over Toledo Saturday.
In the first half, the Toledo Rockets were able to move the ball into the Mizzou 30-yard line on four occasions and only came away with 9 points.
Two of Toledo’s missed opportunities were set-up by big plays. James Franklin threw an interception early in the second quarter and later the Tigers allowed a 30-yard punt return, which enabled Toledo to start a drive at the Mizzou 26 yard line. Both plays led to field goals.
Toledo let another opportunity slip away as time expired in the first half. Trailing 17-9, the Rockets had the ball on the Mizzou 3-yard line when quarterback Terrance Owens threw an interception.
Unlike Toledo, the Tigers did cash in on their opponent's mistakes and their own golden opportunities. An interception and touchdown by Mizzou defensive lineman Markus Golden put Mizzou ahead 24-9 early in the third quarter and it appeared Mizzou might run away with it.
After the inception, the game opened up as Toledo mounted a charge. Mizzou linebacker Andrew Wilson was ejected for intentionally leading with his helmet early in the second half and Toledo's offense took advantage of his absence.
The Rockets finally cashed in on a good opportunity, scoring a touchdown after Bernard Reedy’s 59-yard kickoff return gave them the ball at the Mizzou 39 yard line.
The Rockets followed their first touchdown with a 6-play 60-yard touchdown drive, as Owens found receiver Alonzo Russell for a 41-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 24-23 with just over four minutes in the left in the third quarter.
The Toledo comeback hopes were then quickly dashed by James Franklin, Henry Josey and Marcus Murphy.
The Tigers responded with two touchdowns of their own. Henry Josey scored on a one-yard touchdown yard run with 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Mizzou then capitalized on a poor, 9-yard Toledo punt that allowed them to start a touchdown scoring drive at the Rockets’ 44-yard line. Marcus Murphy scored from 8 yards to cap the drive and finish off the scoring.
