COLUMBIA, Mo. (Missouri Football App) -- Missouri head football coach Gary Pinkel told media members Monday that there will most likely be five quarterbacks on scholarship competing in 2013.
Senior James Franklin, redshirt sophomore Corbin Berkstresser, redshirt freshman Maty Mauk, incoming freshman Trent Hosick and incoming freshman Eddie Printz are the expected players to be competing come 2013.
It’s unknown as of right now if the incoming freshman will be redshirted or not, but the fact of the matter is there will be five players fighting for the quarterback position for the Missouri Tigers.
Pinkel did not tip his cap as to who he thinks is in the lead for 2013.
“The best player plays,” said Pinkel. “Everybody gets an opportunity. There’s no pecking order; I say that in recruiting. We don’t say, ‘well this guy’s been here, so he deserves to start.’ You deserve to start if you win the job and our players know that and respect that.”
Despite Franklin and Berkstresser being the two primary quarterbacks in 2012, the presence of freshman and Mauk creates some traffic on the depth-chart.
“I think it opens up competition,” said Pinkel. “I think that the beauty of it is the best guy’s going to play. I use Brad Smith as an example. He beat out a three-year starter. The reason he played is because he beat him out in practice.”
Much like Brad Smith, Printz, Hosick and Mauk have the chance “dethrone” Franklin and Berkstresser from the depth chart.
Franklin finished 2012 with 1,562 yards passing, 10 touchdowns, 7 interceptions and 308 yards rushing.
Bersktresser played in a significant amount of games and finished 2012 with 1,059 yards passing, 5 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 160 yards rushing and 3 rushing touchdowns.
Mauk used his redshirt in 2012 and didn’t play in a game. In high school in 2011, Mauk finished the season with 5,413 yards passing, 68 touchdowns, 1,768 yards rushing and 24 rushing touchdowns. Along with the gaudy numbers from his high school days, Mauk is a two-time Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year and looks to be the lead candidate to dethrone either Franklin or Berkstresser on the depth chart.
Printz is from Marietta, Georgia and finished his season with 3,350 yards passing, 28 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
Hosick is from Kansas City, Missouri and finished his season with 1,422 yards, 10 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 2,054 yards rushing and 31 rushing touchdowns.
