EARTH CITY, Mo.—Everyone was wondering if it would happen.  If it did, where would it happen?  When?  And, most importantly, by whom?

Well all of our answers came this afternoon when the Rams were the organization to draft Mizzou DE Michael Sam, who came out as gay just a few months ago.  This makes him the first openly gay NFL draft pick in history.

He went in the 7th round, 249th overall, to St. Louis.

With a veteran head coach in Jeff Fisher and a strong locker room, this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.  The Rams have a good stable of defensive ends in Robert Quinn and Chris Long and he will undoubtedly be accepted in the locker room.

This also could be a great thing for the organization overall.  The Rams have seen a lag recently in interest due to poor play but this should help drive team interest with a fan base that’s grown impatient at times.
