Week 7: Cowboys vs. Rams Preview
09:14 PM CDT on Saturday, October 18, 2008
St. Louis (KMOV) -- For the first time in six years, St. Louis will face Dallas at the Edward Jones Dome. And for both teams, a game time decision will be made for a key offensive player, and a veteran has been added to the roster.
Orlando Pace was limited in practice this week and could give way to Adam Goldberg starting at left tackle.
For Dallas, Brad Johnson took the quarterback snaps with the first team offense this week after Tony Romo suffered a broken pinkie finger in the loss to Arizona. Romo threw in practice on Wednesday, but was more limited on Thursday and did not practice on Friday.
Dallas will also be without rookie RB Felix Jones (hamstring), WR Sam Hurd (ankle),G Kyle Kosier (foot), CB Terence Newman (abdomen), and LB Anthony Spencer (hamstring). Adam “PacMan” Jones is also out after being suspended by the NFL for violation of the league conduct policy.
Drew Bennett, Tye Hill, and Antonio Pittman remain out for the Rams, however, Keenan Burton returns from his knee injury at wide receiver.
Dallas will also have an addition at wide receiver, trading for Roy Williams from Detroit prior to Tuesday’s deadline. Williams has 17 catches for 232 yards this season, third behind Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton for the Cowboys.
The Rams get their help on the defensive side of the ball in the form of Fakhir Brown, who the team re-signed after he was released by Scott Linehan before the Buffalo loss.
Brown will start at right corner, while Jason Craft will slide to the nickel and Ron Bartell will start at left corner.
And while the Cowboys will be without two of their starting secondary, Torry Holt says the Rams are not taking anything for granted. “I think (Mike) Jenkins is an incredible athlete. He’ll probably be starting at the right corner. He and (Anthony) Henry and those other guys coming in off the bench--looking at them on film, they should be pretty good.
“There are some areas there that we feel we can take advantage of if we get what we want. We know that they will come out and play hard for four quarters and try to give their defense an opportunity to win the ball game, but it will be up to us to execute and do what we’re supposed to do to try and take advantage of some of that youth.”
The Cowboys hold a clear statistical advantage over the Rams in the run game (127.8 > 82.4), but there is a similarity between the team’s running backs.
Marion Barber has 110 carries for 440 yards, and is also a threat out of the backfield—catching 128 yards against the Cardinals last week.
“Barber is unique,” says Jim Haslett. “He’s not as big, height wise, as Steven, but he’s powerful. The guy runs hard, the guy runs to hurt people, I mean, he runs hard, he’s got great pad level, he’s a really good receiver, he can run good routes, good blocker. He probably does run a lot like Steven I didn’t even think of the similarities yet, but he probably does.”
Steven Jackson is averaging 118.2 total yards per game—second best in the NFL, and is eager for the challenge of the Dallas defense. “They are going to run their 3-4 defense, two great end rushers that puts a lot of pressure on our quarterback, but I think we have built our way up to this match up and in my opinion, I think we are going to match up well.”
The Dallas defense is led by DeMarcus Ware, who already has six sacks on the season and going back to last season, has sacked the quarterback in six straight games.
Side Notes:
-This is the 29th meeting between the Rams and Cowboys since 1960. The teams have split the series 14-14.
-Torry Holt needs only three receptions to pass Larry Centers (827) for 14th on the NFL’s all-time receptions list.
-Holt needs 73 yards to pass Charlie Joiner (12,146) for 15th on the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list.
-Dante Hall needs only 1 return (punt or kickoff) to tie Brian Mitchell as the NFL’s All-Time Touchdown Return Leader.
