Althoff alum scores first for Illini against Penn State
10:26 PM CDT on Saturday, September 27, 2008
State College, PA (KMOV) -- It is the only Big Ten matchup this weekend that includes two top 25 teams, and the Illinois-Penn State first half has proved to justify the coveted 7 pm CST kickoff in the first two quarters.Illinois was the first to point up points with Belleville Althoff's own Jason Ford getting his first career touchdown with a one-yard run to cap a 60-yard drive that gave the Illini the early lead.
The two teams then traded scoring drives that showcased the versatility of both spread offensive systems to give the Orange and Blue a 14-7 lead. But on their famous "White Out" night, the Nittany Lions wouldn't go away quietly, responding to the Illini's strike with a 7 play, 81-yard drive of their own that ended with a 21-yard strike from Penn State quarterback Darryl Clark to senior wide receiver Derrick Williams. That score concluded an exciting first quarter that included tons of offensive firepower to go along with 244 yards of total offense.
The Illini then moved the ball substantially on their first series of the second quarter, but holding penalties did in the Orange and Blue, as they have for the entire first half. Illinois, the most penalized team in the Big Ten, has racked up five penalties for forty yards, including the two drive-killing penalties to start the second quarter.
The Nittany Lions then brought this raucous Beaver Stadium crowd to it's feet with a seven play drive of its own, making the score 21-14, where it is knotted at after two exciting quarters.
