(KMOV) -- This was a rematch of the October 15th sectional game when The DeSmet Spartans defeated the Lindbergh Flyers 33 to 21. This time it was in the quarterfinals of the Missouri class 6 championship.
On the second play of the game, Lindbergh quarterback Peter Simpson threw an interception to free safety Ryan Cronin, and the Senior returned the ball 35 yards for a touchdown. Lindbergh, unable to move the ball, punted it back to the Spartans who scored on a 48-yard run by their quarterback Durron Neal.
On the Flyer's next series, Cronin intercepted a second pass and ran it back 68 yards for a touchdown, making the score 21 to nothing. A safety and a 63-yard scoring drive had DeSmet up by 30 points with only two minutes left in the half.
A Spartan fumble put Lindbergh in great field position and the team was able to post a touchdown just before the end of the second period.
On the opening possession of the second half, The Spartans' signal caller Neal ran the ball 73 yards for a touchdown, and the route was on. Ryan Cronin intercepted, yet a third pass and ran it back 27 yards for his third return for a touchdown in the game.
The final score was 44 to 12, and it was more about the dominance of the DeSmet defense that controlled the game, than it was the high powered offense that propelled the Spartans on to the Semifinals against the winner of CBC vs. Hazelwood Central.
