(Prepcasts.com) -- It's no secret...in fact, its almost a "given"...that you need good pitching to win consistently at any level of baseball. Isn't that why Little League coaches put their best athletes on the mound in the first days of practice for youngsters? With that in mind, lets take a look at some of the best pitchers (at least statistically) in Missouri this year.

In no particular order..

...Dalton Moats (Park Hill)--6-3 Lefthander, 5-0...has struck out 65 batters in 38 innings (128 batters!); era- 0.58. Attending Coastal Carolina next year (if he doesn't sign professionally)

...Justin Murphy (N.Calloway) just pitched a no-no this week as the Thuderbirds white-washed Clopton 1-0 in an Eastern Missouri Conference game. Murphy struck out 13 batters and pitched around 2 errors. He has yet to permit an earned run ALL YEAR LONG in 45 innings of work. The Thunderbirds are unbeaten in conference at 6-0 with an 8-5 overall record.

...Mark Elbert (SLUH) and Brian Howard are two members of a very strong Jr Billiken pitching staff. At this moment, Elbert shows a 5-0, 1.81, 9 hits/19 inn with 17 strikeouts and only 4 walks mark. Howard is the strikout man of the staff. He has 53 K's in justs 38 innings while he's 5-1 and an sizzling 0.37 era. This pair makes the Jr Bills a handful for any post-season team.

...Ben Lovell (Westminster) is a crafty, slick pitcher for the Wildcats. In his 44 innnings of work, he has a 5-0 record, 50 strikeouts, and 1.59 era.

...before going on any further...as I was researching some of these pitching stats...I wondered how many Missouri High School players are in the Major Leagues.....I was surprised to find that 18 Missourians dot the MLB rosters (not counting born in Missouri--only if you played High School in Missouri)...see how many you can name...answer at end of column :)

..ok..back to other HS pitchers with dazzling marks..

...Justin Atchison (Williard) is now 14-0 in his career when Willard topped the Ozark Tigers 93 in Cen Ozarks Conference play last week. Athison gave up 8 hits and struck out 4 in the win.

...The top ranked Howell Vikings have a staff that has permitted 3 runs or less in 21 of their games this year. The Vikes are 23-4. Leading the way, from our view, is Calvin Munson. Munson is 5-0, 0.76 era, 39 K's in 37 innings. Howell has a team era of 2.9.

...Rob Ewald is the ace of the Ladue Ram staff. He's 5-0 with a sharp 1.55 era in 31.7 innings of work. He's struck out 45 batters (almost 1.5 per inning) and owns an impressive win over SLUH.

Best Game of the week.....

....Blue Springs gets the nod....their back-back thrilling wins were really something! OK...I'm stretching it, calling it a "game of the week". On Wed, the Wildcats won 9-5 over Lee Summit North on a walk-off GRAND SLAM by Corbin Hare! The very next day, the Wildcats trailed their big rival, Blue Springs South 6-5 going into the bottom of the 7th. More heroics...Kyle Reed blasted a one-out, 2 run blast to snatch victory from defeat 7-6. The lead changed hands five times in this exceptional game.

...in high consideration was the Sullivan-Pacific game. Playing for the Four Rivers Championship, Sullivan (14-4) held a 6-1 lead entering the bottom of the 7th inning. The Indians rallied for 5 runs to tie it up! Sullivan showed their poise and pushed across 2 runs in the 8th to with it 8-6. It's really been a banner year for the Eagles. The baseball championship was one of SEVEN different Four Rivers crowns that the Eagles won outright or tied for the Championship!

Can you dominate a game any more than this?

...another no-hitter this week as Tyler Hull (New Franklin) twirled a no-hitter as New Franklin scorched Salisbury 14-0. The day really belonged to Hull, in addition to the no-no, he struck out 9, went 3 for 3 at the plate with a Grand Slam and 7 RBI's!

NFL passing thoughts... isn't the entire league always passing??..

...I was in KC this weekend for arrival of our 1st grandchild so I heard lots of KC sports-talk. For multiple hours, all I heard was that the #1 pick-Fischer plays a position (LT) that another good player (Brandon Albert) is being "franchised"...man, it's not hard...just move the other player or play Fischer one year at RT..could it hurt to have TWO good tackles?

...Tebow had to know that he was gone with Geno Smith being drafted by Jets. Sounds crazy, but I think he could be a Ram! Special series that changes each week...Fischer has enough confidence to try it...it takes confidence to take risks that might fail.

...Three #1 picks for Minnesota...they want to cash in while Adrian Peterson can still break off long runs. He won't do that forever.

...I don't watch any film, or draft shows but I thought that the draft "plan" of the Rams was very good. It procured several players who will upgrade the team...one could be a game-breaker. Could he get injured...sure...and he will some day...but lets' hope he gets 3 good years in...in the NFL, 3 years is a lifetime.

,,,proud-papa sydrome for me...I coached football for many years...one of my former players, signed with Minnesota post-draft. Good going--Rayon Simmons :)
