(FootballStL) – When Alec Ogletree moved down teams’ draft boards due to conduct issues in college, the Rams crossed their fingers the linebacker would fall to them.

A top-10 talent moving into the 2013 NFL Draft, the Rams were able to add him to their staple of young talent. It’s a move that may end up being a steal for the team as they look to improve upon 2012’s 7-8-1 record.

“He’s good athlete. He’s a playmaker. He’s young, he has a lot to learn, but we have veteran leadership over there also,” said Rams Defensive Coordinator Tim Walton. “He’s a guy that’s athletic, can run around, still has a lot to learn, but explosive and is a playmaker. Hopefully, he can carry that over to Sundays.”

Walton admitted when the Rams drafted Ogletree they planned on getting the Georgia graduate in the mix as quickly as possible.

“We brought him in to be the guy. Hopefully, he keeps learning and keeps growing. He has a very good work ethic. He studys the game, practices well, and the thing about it is the offense does such a good job, he goes against good competition,” he said.

And it can’t hurt he’s going against tight end Jared Cook, a fifth-year pro acquired by the Rams in the offseason.

“He’s going against ‘Cookie’ every day, so he’s getting good work,” said Walton. “Offense is throwing a lot of stuff at us, so that makes us have really to prepare.”
