(FootballSTL) -- Steven Jackson is headed to free agency. That doesn’t surprise anyone who has been following the situation closely. The Rams were not going to pay Steven $7 million next season, but didn’t want to have to release him. That’s why they gave him the option to void the final year of his contract.
I’m on record saying Steven has been a warrior on the field and a stand-up guy off of it. But I’m going to hold off on writing his Rams epitaph now.
There’s a chance he’ll finish his career here. I know for a fact that’s what he’d like. The Rams think he can still move the chains. But it will come down to Jackson accepting a deal the Rams are comfortable handing out. That might be two years and $6 to $7 million in total.
Here’s the complicating factor: interest from Super Bowl contenders.
Teams that are legit title contenders may come calling with enticing offers. Denver and Atlanta come to mind immediately. And if Jackson is going to head elsewhere, he wants a contender. He does not want to be part of another rebuilding project.
The Rams don’t figure to make a big splash by signing other teams free agents. But what happens to Jackson and Danny Amendola in free agency should be very interesting.
