ST. LOUIS (FootballStL) -- A life away from the New York spotlight and no distractions from Tebowmania might sound like paradise to Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. But that is what it could have been had the 2009 NFL Draft gone differently.
“It sounded like it,” Sanchez said of almost being drafted by the Rams. “It sounded like things were getting close between there and even Seattle, talking to Seattle the day before the draft. They were talking about making a move up or drafting me that early.”
The Rams would eventually select tackle Jason Smith with the second overall pick while Sanchez went fifth overall to the Jets. Smith has since been traded to the Jets.
Sanchez even made a stop to look at Rams Park in 2009 prior to the draft and quickly became friends with Steven Jackson.
“He is a great dude, great guy. Really loves playing,” Sanchez said. “You can see it in the way he plays and stuff. He is one of those guys you just root for. He is a great guy and a really good athlete and plays hard. You root for him except for when you have got to play against him.”
Sanchez will face Jackson and the Rams at the Edward Jones Dome on Sunday at noon. The game will be televised on CBS.
