ST. LOUIS (FootballStL) -- It doesn’t appear that the services of wide receiver Danny Amendola will be available to the Rams anytime soon due to a collarbone injury suffered on Thursday.

The injury casts a shadow on the Rams, who are over .500 for the first time since 2006, with the so-called “experts” believing the injury to Amendola could cripple the Rams season.  As a result, the team will look for a collective group effort from its receiving core and could give Steve Smith a chance to make an impact.

“Danny going down just opens the door, gives an opportunity to some of our other receivers to step up and make plays,” quarterback Sam Bradford said.  “I think Steve Smith is a tremendous inside receiver.  I look for him to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Smith has been inactive the past two weeks for the Rams, but could get the nod when the team travels to play the Dolphins this Sunday.

“Like a pro.  Worked in, just changed his role, worked to give the defense the best look he possibly could.  He even continued with that today,” head coach Jeff Fisher said of Smith’s handling of being inactive. “Don’t expect him to like it, but he understood and he understands patience.  Unfortunately through injury, he has been given another opportunity.”

Smith, who was active the first three weeks of the season, has caught five passes for 70 yards in 2012.  It is a far cry from Amendola’s 32 receptions for 395 yards.  It is the second straight season that Amendola will have to miss a substantial amount of time.  He missed all of last season after dislocating his elbow in the first week of the season.

Although there is no timetable for Amendola’s return, it is expected to be at least six weeks.
