The Rams spent the offseason gathering new offensive weapons for Sam Bradford. Wide receiver Chris Givens was already in place. Tight End Jared Cook was acquired via free agency. The speedy Tavon Austin, along with his college teammate Stedman Bailey, were added  to give Bradford two more targets to stretch the field.

Bradford now has more options to throw to, but what if the fourth-year quarterback misses game action because of injury? Who will the Rams turn to at the backup quarterback position?

Austin Davis and Kellen Clemens are fighting it out for the number two quarterback role. So far, on the preseason, Davis is 16-31,  for 210 yards a TD and no interceptions. Clemens is 8-24 for 143 yards and TD. Clemens has been picked off 4 times. Davis is a 2nd year man out of Southern Miss, while Clemens brings more experience as an 8 year pro from Oregon.

“We’re alternating Austin and Kellen, but that’s why he’s (Davis) playing and we’re trying to identify that,” said Head Coach Jeff Fisher. Your backup quarterback basically has to be able to come off in an emergency situation, and play without very many practice reps. So, you’ve got to know what to do. You’ve got to be in the ballgame. You’ve got to just pick up where your starter leaves off”.

Bradford is expected play at least a half against the Denver Broncos on Saturday. Davis and Clemens will see extensive time in the 2nd half.
