ST. LOUIS (FootballStL) -- The St. Louis Rams have a daunting task ahead of them this Sunday as the team prepares for the division-rival San Francisco 49ers.

In what will be the third straight game against an NFC West opponent, the 49ers have rebounded since a 26-3 lackluster performance at home against the New York Giants on October 14.

Since the loss, the 49ers have outscored its opponents (Seahawks and Cardinals) by the total score of 37-9.  During the stretch, quarterback Alex Smith has been 32-for-42 passing for 372 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.  But it was his last game that many critics were hushed when he was 18-for-19 with three touchdowns on Monday Night Football.

“There was a lot of criticism of Alex, undue criticism.  You don’t go to the championship game unless you’ve got a quarterback that can throw.  He played very, very well for them,” Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said.  “I don’t like to say manage the game, he is winning games for them because they can run the football.  He is making some good decisions and when you are 19-for-20 [sic] in a ball game, you are doing the right things.”

Smith was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
