(FootballStL) – With running back Isaiah Pead suspended for Sunday’s opener against the Arizona Cardinals, it still remains a mystery who will back up St. Louis Rams starter Daryl Richardson.

Both Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham are vying for the spot, and it could turn out both will split time evenly.

Cunningham would be the guy if going by preseason stats alone (which no NFL coaching staff does). In 20 attempts he rushed for 123 yards, good for a 6.1 yards per carry average. Stacy had 68 rushing yards on 23 carries, an average of 3 yards per attempt.

Both backs offer a step up in the power running game that Richardson has yet to show. As coach Jeff Fisher mentioned at the beginning of training camp, it may not matter who the backup is because there doesn’t appear to be a “bell cow” back.

“I’m not saying that we don’t have one that can’t (be the primary back), we just haven’t seen him do it yet,” Fisher said in late July. “One of them may emerge and carry it 350 times this year, we just don’t know.

By Sunday night, things may become a bit clearer.
