SAN FRANCISCO (FootballStL) -- Who would have guessed that a hit from Rams linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar on 49ers quarterback Alex Smith would create all of this.  ‘All of this’ meaning a quarterback change late in the season with one of the top teams in NFL.

Smith suffered a concussion from the hit and was forced to miss the team’s next game against the Bears.  His backup, Colin Kaepernick, torched the Bears in a 32-7 rout on Monday night.  He was 16-for-23 passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns.

That sparked the quarterback change in San Francisco.  Jim Harbaugh announced he would start Kaepernick against the Saints, a 31-21 win.  He wasn’t as sharp as he was against the Bears as he was 16-for-25 passing for 231 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

It was just enough for Harbaugh to stick with him again for this Sunday against the Rams.

“The factors are that we have two really good quarterbacks – two starting quarterbacks,” Harbaugh said.  “Both have earned that, both deserve that, Alex over a long period of time and Colin over the last three games.  Feel like Colin has the hot hand right now and that’s the way we’ll proceed.”

As for Smith, Kaepernick says he has been nothing but supportive.

“We have a great relationship,” Kaepernick said.  “Our relationship hasn’t changed and we try to help each other out as much as we can.”

The Rams may produce the first true challenge for Kaepernick as Sunday will mark the second time the two will meet.  In limited action against the Rams, Kaepernick was 11-for-17 passing for 117 yards and ran for 66 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts.
