CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- Former Iowa running back Jewel Hampton has transferred to FCS school Southern Illinois.
Hampton, once viewed as a future star for the Hawkeyes, left the program in December after an injury-riddled career at Iowa.
Hampton, who grew up in Indianapolis, rushed for 463 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman in 2008. But he tore the ACL in his right knee and missed the 2009 season, then blew out his left knee in a loss at Arizona last September.
Southern Illinois coach Dale Lennon says Hampton, who has two years of eligibility left, has already enrolled in classes and will participate in spring practice.
Hampton will be eligible to play for the Salukis next season.
