NEW YORK (AP) — Naismith Hall of Famer Don Haskins, women's basketball pioneer Theresa Grentz and former coach George Raveling were presented the sixth annual Lapchick Character Awards.

The awards were handed out Thursday at the New York Athletic Club, recognizing those who have shown the character traits of Joe Lapchick, who coached for St. John's and the New York Knicks.

Haskins, who died in 2008 at 78, coached Texas Western to a barrier-breaking national championship in 1966 when he started five black players and beat Kentucky.

Grentz was women's college basketball's first full-time head coach at Rutgers, where she won the AIAW national championship in 1982. She was the head coach of the U.S. women's Olympic team in 1992, winning the bronze medal.

Raveling was head coach at Washington State, Iowa and Southern California from 1972-1994.
