(BaseballStL) -- The Cardinals take down the Tigers 9-5 at Roger Dean Stadium despite a subpar performance from Adam Wainwright. The Cards de facto ace goes just 4.2 innings and surrenders 6 hits, 4 runs (3 of them earned) and walks one.
Wainwright said it obviously was not a very good start and needs one more before the season starts. That's good because he does get one more start. That will come next Monday here in Jupiter...possibly in a minor league game. That's the day the Cards are in Springfield and Wainwright is excused from going that day. He'll be able to iron out his delivery which was causing him problems today.
He said his ball was up all day long (even in the bullpen before coming in). In the first inning all 3 of his outs were on fly balls and that's simply not Wainwright's (or any pitcher's) game. He's trying to keep the ball on the ground and use his defense to get outs. So when the ball is put in the air as much as it was today...that means something in his delivery needs to be fixed. And that's what Wainwright says is the case.
