(Baseball StL) -- It might not have made sense for the Cardinals to re-sign Kyle Lohse after last season, but it does now. With Chris Carpenter out for the season, and possibly facing retirement with nerve problems in his shoulder, the Cardinals need another quality veteran starter. Lohse is the guy.
Lohse is still on the free agent market. He’s been a victim of the new rule that requires the signing team to forfeit its first round draft pick. Lohse was the best pitcher the Cardinals had last year. He’d look awfully good in the rotation again for 2013.
The Cardinals are a team built to win right now. They’ve got some veterans at the tail end of their career in Carlos Beltran and Rafael Furcal. Most of the other regulars are smack dab in their primes, Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina, David Freese, Allen Craig, Jon Jay. But there are questions in the pitching staff.
Will Adam Wainwright rebound to his form before he had Tommy John surgery? Can Lance Lynn repeat his 18 win season? How much does Jake Westbrook have left in the tank? Can you really count on Jaime Garcia? Are the young flamethrowers Trevor Rosenthal, Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller ready to step up and become quality starters? Maybe, maybe not.
Kyle Lohse would certainly be a stabilizing influence at the top of the rotation right now. I think the Cardinals should put in a phone call to Lohse’s agent Scott Boras, and see what it would take to bring him back to St. Louis.
