(BaseballStL) — In a release announced Monday, the Cardinals declared who will fill the spot in the rotation vacated by the injured Joe Kelly.
26-year-old Tyler Lyons was called up from Memphis for a spot start in the series opener against the Mets.
Lyons is 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA over three starts this season in AAA. He’s struck out 18 in 19 innings while walking five and allowing seven earned runs.
It’s a strong improvement on 2013, where Lyons appeared in 12 games for the Cardinals, going 2-4 in eight starts and allowing 28 runs on 49 hits. He posted a 1.22 WHIP and a 4.75 ERA.
Lyons follows in heavy footsteps, as the Cardinal rotation has posted a 2.29 ERA on the season and has posted a .61 mark over the last seven games, according to ESPN.
Lyons will wear number 70 in Monday’s start.
