(BaseballStL) - For the second straight game, the Cardinals offense got help from the starting pitcher. Shelby Miller not only gave up no runs, but also blasted an RBI double against the Washington Nationals. But that run wasn't enough as the Nationals came back from two runs down to beat the Cards 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth.

The first Redbird run was setup by a Matt Adams double. In the second inning, Adams came around to score after Jhonny Peralta grounded into a double play. In the same inning, Yadier Molina extended his hit streak to 11 games while Jon Jay extended his to 7 games after a single in the eighth.

After a walk to Peter Bourjos, Miller helped his own cause by stroking a double to left field to score Bourjos from first.

Miller's afternoon would come to an end after 5.1 innings while only allowing 4 hits, 5 walks and 7 strikeouts. But Miller would run into trouble in the sixth after walking Danny Espinosa and giving up a single to Jose Labaton with one out. Manager Mike Matheny lifted Miller for Randy Choate. Choate loaded the bases, but got the next two ground ball outs.

Carlos Martinez ran into trouble again for the second straight game. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in the seventh inning.

Adams was then unable to capitalize with runners in first and second with two outs in the eighth. Which would end up being he Redbirds final chance as the Nats scored in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly.

Matheny announced Sunday afternoon that Tyler Lyons will start in place of the injured Joe Kelly as the Cards take on the New York Mets.
