(BaseballSTL) -- Jerry Crasnick from ESPN.com reports, citing a source, the Cardinals are “closing in on a deal” with free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta. It’s unclear if this would be the answer the Cardinals had been looking for as a starter at shortstop or if he would play some third base with the recent trade of David Freese.
Peralta, 31, hit .303 for the Tigers last year to go along with 11 home runs. He plays adequate defense at shortstop but is not considered elite by any means.
It’s unclear how many years and for how much money the Cardinals are apparently going to sign Peralta for at this point.
