(BaseballStL) - Cardinals manager Mike Matheny basically admitted Monday that Pete Kozma will be the club's starting shortstop with Rafael Furcal lost for the season due to Tommy John surgery.

Kozma and Ronny Cedeno were battling for the spot earlier in camp but when asked about the competition Monday, Matheny only mentioned one of them by name.

"I think we've all been pretty open and honest about the fact that we're very comfortable with what Pete Kozma has done and continued to do," Matheny said. "You guys can do with that what you want, but we've been very happy with how he's been going about it and he's played a real nice shortstop for us and has had good at-bats as well."

The vote of confidence in Kozma would appear to put Cedeno's roster spot in question. He signed a 1-year, $1.15 million deal in the offseason but hasn't looked impressive this spring and could be in a battle with Matt Adams for the final roster spot.

Asked about Cedeno's battle, Matheny said, "Just looking to continue to watch him and see how he fits in."
