(BaseballStL) -- The St. Louis Cardinals were beaten 5-1 by the New York Mets and third baseman David Freese failed to extend his hitting streak on Wednesday.
Freese entered the game with a 20-game hitting streak, which is a career best and the longest in the majors this season, but went hitless in four at-bats. He failed to hit the ball out of the infield while striking out and grounding out twice each.
He was 29-for-76 (.382) during the hit streak, which raised his season average to .287 before finishing at .281 following the hitless performance on Wednesday.
It has been an anything but consistent season for Freese, who batted .163 in April. The last time he was hitless in a game came in a 5-2 loss to the Mets on May 16.
