(BaseballStL) - After hitting just .238 with a .290 on-base percentage in 2013, Cardinals infielder Daniel Descalso understands why the team went out and made a few big splashes during the offseason.

Shortstop Jhonny Peralta was signed to a 4-year deal while veteran Mark Ellis was inked to a one year contract.  Kolten Wong is expected to get the majority, if not all, of the at-bats at second base while All Star Matt Carpenter takes over at third with the departure of David Freese.

Where that leaves Descalso remains to be seen.

"We'll see where I fit," Descalso said. "I'll show up to spring training ready to compete and play good baseball.  Obviously they go out and make a big signing with Peralta, who's a great player.  And they bring in a guy like Ellis who's been in this league for a long time and been productive.  We'll see where I fit in that equation."

One thing that won't change is his work ethic that helped him become a .300 hitter at the minor league level.

"I'll put in a lot of work at all three spots (third base, shortstop and second base) and be ready for when we all go down to Florida," Descalso said.

Desclalso's path to making the team appears to be as a backup shortstop behind Peralta.  His competition would seem to be last year's starter Pete Kozma along with emerging minor leaguer Greg Garcia.
