(BaseballStL) – The Cardinals’ second-round draft pick Carson Kelly is getting his first taste of Major League Baseball.

Carson Kelly was in town to watch the Cardinals beat the White Sox on Thursday night. On Friday the  third baseman signed his first big-league contract, smiles for some photos, put on uniformand took batting practice.

Kelly was the 86th overall pick, coming in the second round of the MLB draft. Kelly opted to sign with the Cardinals rather than taking a scholarship to Oregon. No doubt a $1.6 million signing bonus made that decision a little easier for the Portland native.

Kelly is 6’2”, 200 pounds, bats and throws from the right side. He was a 2012 Rawlings 1st Team All-American. He was the Player of the Year in 2011 playing for Westview High School. He led his team to an Oregon state championship his junior year.

Playing in St. Louis is great news for his mother who reportedly has relatives in St. Charles, Missouri. Kelly’s father Mike is reportedly a Cubs fan.
