(BaseballStL) -- There’s good pitching. There’s great pitching. Then there’s the duo the Dodgers are going to throw at the Cardinals in Games 1 and 2 of the NLCS.
Zack Greinke will throw tomorrow night against Joe Kelly with a 2.63 ERA this season and 148 strikeouts over 177.2 innings. Clayton Kershaw? Oh, he’s only commonly viewed as the best pitcher in Major League baseball with his 1.83 ERA and 232 strikeouts this season.
They’ll worry about Kershaw when the time comes (Saturday afternoon in Game 2) but for right now the Cards focus is on Greinke and Game 1. And, for the Redbirds, there’s only one word that comes to mind when they think about him.
“Stud,” Freese quipped. “They have a good 1-2 punch (with Greinke and Clayton Kershaw) and their whole staff is good. But we just have to come out just like (in Game 5 versus the Pirates) and try to score early.”
“To be a successful team you have to beat good pitchers,” Jon Jay said. “We got our work cut out for us but we just have to keep doing what we’re doing.”
The Dodgers actually got off to a horrible start this season - they were in last place in the NL West up until the beginning of July - and nearly fired their manager Don Mattingly. But all the pieces that were supposed to make them such a great team finally started coming into place.
“They have a good team. There’s no doubt about that,” Carlos Beltran said. “They’ve really been able to turn their season around. At the beginning they didn’t play well but they were able to put everything together and start playing good baseball so right now they look very different from what people thought at the beginning. It’s going to be a tough series but it’s going to be a fun one.”
