SAN FRANCISCO (BaseballStL) -- It doesn’t get any better than a Game 7, winner-goes-on duel to see who advances to the World Series.

For the Cardinals, the good news is that they won’t have to face Ryan Vogelsong, who carved up batters in a 6-1 victory in Game 6.  Vogelsong allowed just two runs to score on eight hits and three walks in 14 innings pitched against the Cardinals in the National League Championship Series.

The Giants will send right-hander Matt Cain to the mound for the second time this series.  Cain allowed six hits and three runs in 6.2 innings pitched during a rain-delayed 3-1 Cardinals victory in Game 3.

Cain has been less than stellar compared to the regular season.  In three postseason games, Cain has posted a 1-2 record with a 4.67 ERA.  He was 16-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 32 starts this season.

The Cardinals will send Kyle Lohse to the mound for Game 7.  Lohse has posted a 2-0 record with a 1.96 ERA.  He allowed one run on seven hits and five walks in 5.2 innings pitched during Game 3 of the NLCS.

During his last outing, Lohse often flirted with danger as he gave up too many walks along with hits.  The Cardinals will need a better outing from Lohse because he allowed too many scoring opportunities which may not go the team’s way this time around.

The edge goes to the Cardinals based on the pitching matchup, but it won’t mean anything if the bats don’t come alive.
