ORLANDO, Fla. (CBS Sports) — The Orioles and Cardinals had trade talks revolving around Shelby Millerand J.J. Hardy, but St. Louis told Baltimore there’s no deal to be made.

There’d been some buzz that the Cardinals might consider moving Miller despite his brilliant rookie campaign and immense talent, but there was no suggestion of such an interest in this dialogue.

Hardy’s value never has been higher, as he won both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove while hitting 25 home runs in 2013, and Baltimore would only consider parting with him for a terrific young pitcher. The Cardinals close the doors on nothing, but it’s a source of discussion here at the baseball GM Meetings why they’d even think about trading Miller.

Part of the mystery is why Miller virtually stopped pitching come playoff time after clearly being one of the Cardinals’ best pitchers in the regular season, going 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA. The Cardinals said he had a bad matchup with the Pirates, who had hit him hard in the regular season, then decided to stick with Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn in later rounds because they were doing well. They say there are no injury concerns with Miller, who finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting to Jose Fernandez and Yasiel Puig, and there was no evidence of any.

The Cardinals receive many inquiries about their wealth of young pitchers. Of course, the Orioles also would have interest in Carlos Martinez. But he has to be even more off limits than Miller.

The Orioles are looking at many free agent pitchers, as well, including Bronson Arroyo and their own Scott Feldman.
